Finasteride is used to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia. At lower doses, Finasteride may be used to treat male-pattern baldness which occurs when there is a progressive miniaturisation of the hair follicle, resulting in finer and shorter hair.

Eventually, this process results in a miniature follicle with no hair. The causes are of hairloss are associated with hormone inbalances and a genetic predisposition.Despite the miniaturisation of the follicle, it remains alive and theoretically hair could grow again. The typical pattern of baldness starts with loss at the hairline, gradually taking shape into an 'M' pattern, and culminating in a 'horseshoe' of hair around the sides of the head.
